The First Light: Why Babcock Needed The Torch
A new student-run publication is stepping up to record Babcock University’s overlooked achievements — from hosting global tech leaders to the quiet triumphs that too often go undocumented.

There is a level of greatness that can only be remembered through meticulous record-keeping, through memorabilia and works that capture the intensity of achievement. Babcock has many such great events, yet time and again, they are not remembered. The ability to keep these records is poor, and thus, only the fleeting sounds of voices fill the atmosphere. There is zero proof, with word of mouth serving as the only means of remembrance. This has been the theme of the university and its exploits for years. Why is there no value placed on these exploits? The Babcock Torch was born to change that.
A few months ago, Babcock had the opportunity to be the first university in the entire nation to host one of the most prestigious and innovative companies in the tech industry: NVIDIA. In retrospect, the buzz around it was saddening, as many members of the Babcock community had little to no knowledge of this event. As a team, we felt deeply disheartened and thought about how many other groundbreaking achievements have been swept under the rug with no regard for the time and effort that must have gone into them. NVIDIA was the catalyst we needed to take action. It served as a blessing in disguise because, as a result, The Babcock Torch was born.
The Babcock Torch is more than a newspaper; it is a living archive and a voice for our entire community. We document the stories that define us: the groundbreaking events, the quiet achievements, the voices that often go unheard. Through compelling articles, powerful photography, and adept storytelling, we capture the moments that make Babcock exceptional.
We are the memory keepers of today and the historians of tomorrow. Every event we cover, every story we tell, every photograph we take becomes part of Babcock’s permanent record. This will serve as proof that these moments mattered, that this work had value, that these people made a difference.
But The Torch is not just about looking back. We are fuel for the current fire, spotlighting the innovations happening right now and illuminating the path forward. We belong to everyone, from the student with a quiet story to tell, to the faculty member breaking new ground, to the alumni watching from afar. The Babcock Torch reflects the thoughts, hearts, and minds of the Babcock collective because your stories are our stories, and together, we’re writing history.
The Babcock Torch is out to set standards, create culture and leave lasting legacy in the sands of time. We’re building a community where documentation is valued as much as achievement itself, where the work of capturing a moment is seen as essential and the moment is respected in time and for years to come. We believe that every great speech deserves to be quoted, every breakthrough deserves to be photographed and every innovator deserves to be interviewed. We are determined to create a home for the most creative minds, a place where every story is spotlighted and a system where there is value for record keeping.
The plan is to start with what we missed. In the coming weeks, we’ll be revisiting the NVIDIA event. We will be uncovering the stories behind it and speaking with those who made it happen. We’ll be tracking down the other achievements that slipped through the cracks, the performances that moved audiences and the quiet acts of excellence that shaped our community. Consider this our commitment, we must all believe that if it happened at Babcock and it mattered then we’ll find it, document it and preserve it.
The torch has plans for all of this and more, but we can’t do this without you; in fact, we don’t want to. The Babcock Torch belongs to all of us. You are our eyes and ears, the voice through which we speak, and your stories form the lens through which we see. This is your invitation to be part of something bigger than a publication. By joining us, you’re joining a movement to preserve our collective memory in better ways than before. You’re joining us to celebrate our shared achievements and to ensure that Babcock’s light continues to shine long after we’ve graduated and moved on. The Torch will be a time capsule, where generations of students after us will explore and learn about the rich and vibrant history made every day within the corners of our great institution.
The torch has been lit. Now, let’s keep it burning.
